A 28-year-old man was in custody Friday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after ramming his Hummer through the wall of a San Dimas motel at the height of a family disturbance, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 1:11 a.m. at the Extended Stay America motel in the 600 block of West Bonita Avenue, with deputies responding to a call of a family disturbance, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Elisabeth Sachs said.

Richard Melendez of Bell was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon — the vehicle — and was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail, the sheriff’s department reported.

Melendez allegedly drove his vehicle through the structure wall in an effort to enter the room where his mother and sister were staying, the sheriff’s department reported. The women vacated the room as the assault began, Sachs said.

“By some miracle, no one was injured,” she said.

The suspect’s wife and four children — ages 1, 3, 5, and 6 — were asleep in a room across the hall when the incident occurred, the sheriff’s department reported.

A building inspection will be required to assess the damage.
