Sunnylands Center and Gardens will host a free Family Day event Sunday to celebrate its current exhibition through a variety of activities exploring fabric and fiber arts, officials said Sunday.
Variations to a Theme: William Haines at Sunnylands will be celebrated from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at 37977 Bob Hope Drive. Admission and parking will be free.
“Inspiration for the day’s activities was drawn from the design techniques employed by Sunnylands’ late decorator, William Haines,” SCG officials wrote in a statement. “His signature Hollywood Regency style is rife with intricate textile work, from trapunto quilting and biscuit tufting on chairs and stools to leather-bound tables with gold tooling embellishments.”
Under the guidance of local textile artists and community art partners, attendees will have opportunities to learn about a centuries-old embroidery style from Japan, create their own tapestry, and explore sustainable sewing and the art of embossing.
The decorator designed and installed more than 450 pieces specifically made for Sunnylands, officials said. The pieces included cabinets, tables, sofas, desks and chairs, which are on display at the center and open to the public for free Wednesday through Sunday.
