The Newport Beach Police Association was raising money Thursday for the family of detective Jon Jarema, who died after a two-year battle with cancer.

The money will go directly to the Jarema family “to allow them time to grieve without any financial worries,” according to the association.

The fundraiser, which is on the Peace Officers Research Association of California’s website, had raised nearly $35,000 of its $75,000 goal as of Thursday evening.

Donations can be made at bit.ly/2TvdKFz.

Jarema is survived by his wife and 3-year-old twins. He was a 12-year veteran of the Newport Beach Police Department. He was a patrol officer and SWAT team member before becoming a detective.

Jarema died May 9 at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian at the age of 36. He was diagnosed in May 2018 with a cancerous brain tumor.

“Jon still came to work during that time and always had a positive attitude,” the Newport Beach Police Association said on the fundraiser’s page. “He never failed to make us laugh at the police department.”

Said Newport Beach Police Department Chief Jon T. Lewis: “Above all else, Jon’s devotion to his colleagues, dedication to duty, and charismatic smile will always be remembered.”
