A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to more than a dozen years in prison for stabbing a mother and her two sons, including an 11-year-old, during a burglary in Costa Mesa, according to court records obtained Monday.
Israel Larios Jr., who accepted a plea deal from an Orange County Superior Court judge, was sentenced Friday to 12 years and eight months.
Larios pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder, a count of first-degree burglary, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a count of criminal threats, all felonies. He also admitted sentencing enhancement allegations for the personal use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury on his victims.
Larios broke into an apartment in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue Oct. 18, 2016, police said. When officers arrived at the residence about 7:30 p.m. that night they found the mother and her two sons, including an older sibling who was 17, suffering from stab wounds and the three victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, police said.
While burglarizing the apartment, the three arrived home and surprised him, prompting the attack as they attempted to flee, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
A neighbor identified Larios as the attacker to first responders, prompting a short police chase, prosecutors said.
