Relatives of a man who was fatally struck by an SUV while walking across a Pasadena street in 2017 are suing that city and the alleged driver.
Luis Sanchez of Pasadena, 29, died at the scene of the accident that occurred about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 18, 2017, in the 600 block of North Los Robles Avenue. Police said Sanchez was crossing Los Robles when he was hit by a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe.
The Los Angeles Superior Court suit was filed Monday by Leonardo and Amparo Sanchez, the decedent’s parents, and his three children.
The wrongful death suit seeks unspecified damages. A representative for the Pasadena City Attorney’s Office could not be immediately reached for comment.
Also named as a defendant is Anthony Louis Torres, identified in the complaint as the driver of the SUV. Police previously said the 53-year-old Los Angeles man remained at the scene and was not arrested.
The suit alleges the city was negligent because there was no crosswalk or other traffic-control device in the area. Torres was at fault for not yielding the right-of-way to a pedestrian, the suit alleges.
However, police said Sanchez may have been under the influence of alcohol and witnesses told officers the man stepped into the path of the SUV.
