Attempted murder and other felony charges were filed Monday against a 21-year-old man charged in a slashing attack on his parents, teenage sister and live-in girlfriend at the family’s Stanton residence.
Thomas Oakland Kuranda faces one count of attempted murder, two counts each of making criminal threats and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, with sentence- enhancing allegations for the personal use of a knife and inflicting great bodily injury.
Kuranda has been in custody since Friday. Deputies were called about 12:50 a.m. that day to the 11100 block of Irwin Drive and found the three injured family members, along with the suspect’s girlfriend, who had a facial wound, according to Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect’s 53-year-old father was the most severely injured, and the other three were treated for “mild to moderate injuries,” Braun said, adding that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Kuranda got into an argument with his relatives that escalated into a physical conflict, in which he allegedly used some sort of a blade, like a box cutter, to slash his father, 57-year-old mother and 14-year-old teenage sister, Braun alleged.
