The Huntington Beach Police Department is investigating an act of vandalism as a possible hate crime targeting a black family, an officer said Wednesday.

“We had officers out to investigate a possible hate crime,” Huntington Beach police Lt. S. Winks told City News Service.

The incident, consisting of a rock being hurled through an apartment window, was reported around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the 6400 block of Warner Avenue, Officer Jennifer Marlatt told the Orange County Register.

“I heard him say, ‘I’m going to kill you … with the n-word,” the victim, a 44-year-old woman named Elisha Caballero, told CBS2. “I was terrified. It was horrible. We still have glass everywhere. This has just been a horrible experience for us.”

Caballero told the station she believes the incident to be a hate crime, adding, “For him to say those words, that we know that it was done out of hate.”

A member of the family witnessed a seemingly tall white man wearing blue jeans and a black hat riding away from the home on a dark bicycle, Marlatt told The Orange County Register.

Anyone with information on the vandalism was urged to call the Huntington Beach Police Department at (714) 960-8843 or, to provide an anonymous tip, Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
