Los Angeles police Thursday asked for the public’s help to identify a boy believed to be deaf and autistic who was found by himself in Union Station, and they were searching surveillance video for leads.
The boy was turned over to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services overnight, a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Station said.
The unattended child was discovered around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles by LAPD’s Transit Services Division officers, said police Lt. Leonard Perez.
“He’s cute. He’s clean. He belongs to somebody,” Perez said. “He obviously didn’t get here by himself.”
The child is deaf but could not communicate with a sign language interpreter, Perez said. The boy is possibly autistic.
The child has accepted water, food and toys from officers, he said. There are no reports of missing children.
The boy is black and appears to be between 5 and 7 years old. He stands about 3 feet 5 inches tall and weighs around 60 pounds. He has brown eyes, and long, dark braided hair.
He was wearing a blue down jacket, white tank top shirt, beige pants and gray tennis shoes, the LAPD said.
Anyone who has information to help identify the boy was asked to call the LAPD’s Transit Services Division at (213) 922-1410. Tipsters can also call the LAPD’s 24-hour tipline at (877) 527-3247 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
